WHY DOES MY NECK HURT?
Your neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the spine and contains seven small vertebrae. Despite being a small part of your body, there is a lot going on. The vertebrae – in combination with ligaments and muscles – form a protective structure surrounding the spinal cord. They also support the entire weight of your head, which is on average about 12 pounds. While the neck is a mechanical marvel, able to move your head in nearly every direction, this extreme flexibility also makes it very susceptible to injury.
Here are some common symptoms of neck pain – if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below or find your pain getting progressively worse, please feel free to Contact Us at our Peterborough Clinic for Same Day Exam and Treatment options.

WHAT CAUSES NECK PAIN?
There are numerous sources of neck pain – “Tech Neck” is prevalent in all age groups and caused by hours spent hunched over computers or smartphones.
Injury and accidents are another common cause of neck pain. Any sudden head movement forward, backward or sideways can cause injury commonly referred to as Whiplash. Car accidents are the most common cause of Whiplash but sporting activities, falls and physical abuse also contribute.
Ageing and degenerative disorders such as Herniated Discs, Arthritis and Spinal Stenosis (a condition where the nerve passageways in the vertebrae narrow compressing the nerve and causing pain).
Poor posture, obesity, and weak abdominal muscles often contribute to a lack of stability for the spine, causing the neck to bend forward to compensate.
Sleeping in an awkward position is a common contributor to neck pain – most of us at one time or another have woken up with a sore neck after falling asleep on the couch or watching TV in bed.
